Most lumbar spine osteophytes do not present with obvious clinical symptoms and may be discovered incidentally during a physical examination. Some lumbar spinal osteophytes are located in the spinal canal or intervertebral foramina and can cause nerve compression, often manifesting clinically as back and leg pain, sometimes with sensory abnormalities, and in some cases intermittent claudication.
