“Geodesic” Reverse Jaw

The term “geomandibular” is a customary term used by the general public to refer to anomalies of the opposite jaw (mandibular protrusion and maxillary retrusion). In mild cases, many parents will have orthodontic treatment before the child reaches puberty. However, for patients with cleft lip and palate, Binder’s syndrome, etc. who have maxillary dysplasia, simple orthodontics (braces) may not be able to achieve correction. In the past, many doctors tended to treat patients by first straightening the teeth to create the conditions for surgery, and then, after the surgery, straightening the teeth step by step (i.e., orthodontics-orthognathics-orthodontics). However, this makes the patient’s treatment cycle longer and causes problems for patients who travel long distances for treatment. For surgeons who are skilled and experienced in surgery, the orthognathic prioritization method can be used, where the patient’s bone position is firstly corrected, and after the maxillomandibular relationship is repositioned, orthodontic treatment is then carried out to rearrange the teeth. This greatly shortens the entire treatment cycle and facilitates patient visits. For the patients who come to our department, at present, basically the orthognathic priority is the main focus, and orthodontic treatment can be carried out two weeks after orthognathic treatment, which greatly shortens the whole treatment cycle, facilitates the patients, and obtains a high degree of satisfaction.
