How long does it usually take for nodular acne to heal on its own?

Most nodular acne can subside on its own in about one year, but in some patients, nodular acne does not subside for many years and even forms permanent scarring. Acne is a common inflammatory disfiguring skin disease in adolescence. Nodular acne is caused by a large accumulation of sebum, keratinized material, and pus cells in the sebaceous glands of hair follicles due to ineffective treatment of early inflammation. Since acne is self-limiting, acne will gradually subside after puberty, and acne nodules will gradually shrink and disappear, but this process usually takes longer, and in a few patients, acne nodules do not subside for many years. Some patients still have the misconception that acne can get better on its own as they age, but since some severe acne can form permanent scars later in life, early treatment is clinically recommended.
