How is liver abscess caused?

Liver abscesses are caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Common pathogenic bacteria include Escherichia coli, anaerobic cocci, Aspergillus, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella. Common routes of infection include biliary-derived infections, portal venous system infections and blood-borne infections via the hepatic artery.
