Why does “jelly” semen affect fertility?

When it comes to male infertility, people will think of sperm without vitality, commonly known as low survival rate, in fact, even if there is sperm, if the semen is always like jelly, then the sperm will be tied to the legs and feet, unable to meet with the egg, it is difficult to achieve fertility wishes. In common parlance, semen is not liquefied because the semen is as thick as “jelly”, the sperm inside the semen is bound and cannot move freely, the sperm is trapped by the semen barrel, just like a person swimming in the mud, it is difficult to move, and often has very poor mobility, so it is not easy to have children naturally. Under normal circumstances, semen is in a liquid state the moment it is expelled from the body, otherwise it would be difficult to be expelled, but it quickly solidifies and is usually gradually liquefied within 5-30 minutes. This characteristic allows the ejaculated semen to stay longer in the vagina to increase the chances of conception and gradually liquefy in the right amount of time to release the vigorous sperm, which is considered a natural masterpiece to allow men to pass on their fertility. If it does not liquefy completely within 30 minutes after ejaculation, it is called delayed liquefaction, which has some effects on fertility; if it still does not liquefy after more than an hour, it is called semen non-liquefaction. The coagulation and liquefaction of semen are mainly regulated by the balance of liquefaction and coagulation factors secreted by the prostate and seminal vesicle glands. The coagulation of semen after discharge from the body is related to the coagulation factor secreted by the seminal vesicle gland, while the liquefaction of semen is caused by the content and activity of protein hydrolase in the prostate gland, which will be affected to varying degrees and cannot hydrolyze the interwoven fibrous proteins in the semen, resulting in the non-liquefaction of semen and reducing the space for sperm activity. So, how is semen non-liquefaction treated? Since those with abnormal semen liquefaction can be accompanied by infectious diseases of the reproductive tract such as prostatitis, appropriate anti-infection treatment, together with drugs to improve the secretion function of the prostate, is one of the effective ways to improve semen non-liquefaction. Direct use of medications to promote semen liquefaction, such as intramuscular injection of chymotrypsin, topical vaginal use of alpha-amylase, and oral administration of small doses of androgens and clomiphene, can be effective for 2-3 weeks mostly. If the above methods do not work, we can consider pre-treating the semen outside the body and then performing artificial insemination of the husband’s semen (AIH). How to prevent the occurrence of semen non-liquefaction? Men should pay attention to protecting their prostate in their daily life, such as not drinking alcohol, consuming less spicy food, avoiding constant cycling and sedentary, and having a regular sex life.
