Radiation therapy alone can cure cervical cancer

Radiotherapy for cervical cancer (hereinafter referred to as radiotherapy), which has been used since the beginning of intracavitary radium therapy for more than a century, is still one of the basic treatment methods for cervical cancer. I work in the Department of Oncology and Gynecology of Shanghai Cancer Hospital and mainly see gynecologic cancer patients, especially specializing in radiotherapy for cervical cancer. I have collected a lot of patients’ questions about radiotherapy for cervical cancer from the clinic and would like to share with you the “past life and present life” of radiotherapy for cervical cancer on the platform of “”. The first patient in Shanghai Cancer Hospital was treated with radiotherapy for cervical cancer Huang Xiao, deputy chief physician of the Department of Gynecology, Cancer Hospital of Fudan University: The predecessor of Shanghai Cancer Hospital was called “China-Belgium Radium Hospital”, which is a specialized hospital dedicated to cancer treatment founded by China and Belgium. When the hospital was founded, Belgium bought a few grams of radium, two deep X-ray treatment machines and one X-ray diagnostic machine. Therefore, the emblem of Shanghai Cancer Hospital is a ray of radiation. ”Radium” is not a stranger to the common people. One hundred years ago, an outstanding female scientist won the Nobel Prize for the discovery of radium. She is known to the world as Madame Curie. Radium can be used for tumor treatment. Cervical cancer is the first tumor that can be cured by radiation. “The first case of cervical cancer was treated after the operation of the C.B.R.E. Hospital. In 1956, the first research paper on radiotherapy for cervical cancer in China was also written by a doctor at Shanghai Cancer Hospital. It discussed the treatment of 156 cases of cervical cancer patients who received radiotherapy, and the effect was remarkable. It can be seen that radiotherapy for cervical cancer has a long history. Radiotherapy alone can cure cervical cancer Huang Xiao, deputy chief physician of the Department of Gynecology, Cancer Hospital of Fudan University: Many people think that radiotherapy is an adjuvant and a “helpless choice for those who cannot have surgery”. However, this view does not apply to cervical cancer radiotherapy. This is because cervical cancer can be cured by radiotherapy alone. The indications for radiotherapy for cervical cancer are so broad that patients with any condition can do receive radiotherapy. And like surgery, it is only for patients with pre-stage IIa. Tumors have a spectrum of diseases. Some of them are “rich tumors”, such as endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer, and most of the patients are high intellectuals; some are “backward tumors”, such as cervical cancer, and most of the patients have limited knowledge, economic examination and unsatisfactory health condition. This has led to the fact that most cervical cancer patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease and are not suitable for surgical treatment. And radiotherapy gives them the hope of reliable and guaranteed treatment.
