Voice tremor is the resonant vibration of sound waves that originate in the larynx and travel along the trachea, bronchi and alveoli to the chest wall when the examiner makes a sound. It is also called tactile tremor because it is touched by the examiner’s hand. The examiner gently places the ulnar edge or palmar surface of the left or right hand on the symmetrical part of the chest wall on both sides. The examinee is asked to repeat the long “yi” sound with equal intensity. From top to bottom, from inside to outside, cross both sides and compare the similarities and differences of the corresponding parts of the voice tremor on both sides. Note whether there is any enhancement or weakening, which can be used to determine the nature of the intrathoracic lesion.
