Understanding osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a systemic disease characterized by reduced bone mass and microstructural destruction of bone tissue, resulting in “brittle” bones that are prone to fracture. It is like a rotten tree, dry and aged, with a hollow inner structure, which can crack or suddenly break with the slightest shaking or without any external influence. Osteoporosis is a “silent” chronic disease that is mild in its early stages and usually has no pain or other symptoms until a fracture occurs in the spine, hip or wrist, hence the term “silent killer”. Once a hip fracture occurs, lower extremity motion is impaired, bed rest is prolonged, and 20%-30% of patients die from various complications such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular lesions, and venous embolism. Even for those who survive, half of them will join the ranks of the disabled, and the quality of life will be greatly reduced, bringing a heavy burden to families and society, so we should pay attention to osteoporosis. People know “old shrinkage, old hunchback”, “old body aches”, “old legs have no strength”, “old bones are brittle ” and think it is a normal phenomenon. But in fact this is the performance of osteoporosis. Specifically, osteoporosis has four major symptoms. 1, height becomes shorter, adults to 40 years of age, every 10 years of growth, height decline 1 cm, old age, that is, after 60 years of age, the average height decline of 3-125px, which is mostly due to osteoporosis caused. In patients with osteoporosis, the spine is under prolonged pressure, and the anterior edge of certain vertebrae collapse, while the posterior edge maintains its original shape, showing wedge-shaped changes, spinal deformity or even hunchback. 2, bone and joint pain, more than half of the fracture osteoporosis patients will feel pain. Especially women will feel back pain, followed by pain in the back of the shoulder, neck, knee and ankle, and in severe cases, pain in the bones and joints of the whole body. Most of this pain has no cause and can occur during activity or rest, sometimes good and sometimes bad, so many people treat it as excessive fatigue and muscle damage. 3, frequent cramps, weakness, many patients with osteoporosis will have frequent leg and foot cramps, the direct cause of which is the regulation of muscle function calcium and phosphorus metabolism abnormalities. Under normal circumstances, calcium inside and outside the cells of the body should be in balance, and frequent cramps may be a signal; the body’s ability to regulate calcium and phosphorus has decreased. Osteoporosis can also lead to a decrease in physical strength, the patient is weak, limbs are sore and weak. 4, easy to fracture, osteoporotic fracture mainly occurs in four parts: spine, hip, wrist bone (distal end of flexure) and ankle, of which spinal compression fracture is the most easily ignored, early manifested only as back pain, in severe cases, severe pain can occur, even turning over is difficult. Osteoporotic fractures are often characterized by minor violence or daily life, so-called “fragility fractures”. Some elderly people fracture their bones when they go shopping for groceries, or when they squat in the toilet, or in severe cases, when they cough. Another characteristic of this fragility fracture is that it can happen repeatedly, which means that after a fracture, the risk of another fracture in a different part of the body is greatly increased. Therefore, after one fracture occurs, this initiator, osteoporosis, must be effectively treated in order to prevent another fracture from occurring. The diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on an assessment of the individual’s physical condition, daily habits and lifestyle, as well as measurement of bone mineral density. Because the risk of fracture is geometrically related to bone density, the lower the bone density, the greater the risk of fracture. There is a wide range of equipment available to measure bone density, but the most medically accepted method is to use a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to measure bone density at the lumbar spine and hip, which is a simple and safe way to accurately measure the degree of bone loss. In addition, the measurement of some biochemical indicators in blood and urine is also important for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Many elderly people are concerned about the question of whether osteoporosis can be treated. Osteoporosis is caused by the decrease of hormone level in the body after old age and the decrease of function of various organs, resulting in active osteoclasts, bone resorption exceeding bone formation and continuous loss of bone mass. Although it is an inevitable phenomenon in the aging process of the human body, a reasonable choice of treatment, based on calcium and active vitamin D supplementation, calcitonin, bisphosphonates or estrogen receptor modulators and other drugs, a significant number of patients after a year of treatment, the review showed that the bone density increased, indicating that the treatment is not just to delay the loss of bone mass, but to stop the loss of bone mass, and at the same time can improve bone quality, is the cure. Chinese medicine believes that the kidney is the root of life, the kidney collects essence and produces marrow, so kidney deficiency is the root cause of osteoporosis; in addition, “the liver and kidney have the same source of essence and blood”, “the kidney is the root of the first day, the spleen is the root of the second day, the kidney and spleen are related to each other”, so Chinese medicine In addition, “liver and kidney essence and blood are of the same origin”, “kidney is the origin of the congenital nature, spleen is the origin of the posterior nature, and kidney and spleen are related to each other”. Chinese herbal medicine is given to treat the symptoms of osteoporosis, and it can be combined with acupuncture and physiotherapy to relieve the clinical symptoms of osteoporosis. In conclusion, osteoporosis is a serious threat to the health of the elderly, and after a clear diagnosis, combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment can effectively prevent and treat osteoporosis.
