Why do I stop menstruating when I take antipsychotics?

Many people with psychiatric disorders experience increased prolactin after taking antipsychotic medications. Especially in women of childbearing age, they may even experience menopause or reduced menstrual flow and shorter periods. Examination of sex hormone levels shows a significant increase in prolactin. This condition occurs because antipsychotic drugs alter the dopamine level in the funnel of the brain nodules, which reduces the normal inhibitory effect on the secretion of prolactin, causing an increase in prolactin, which prevents the normal secretion of estrogen and progesterone, and so abnormal menstruation occurs.
