Some people refer to people who think and act strangely as “psychopaths,” especially in jest. You will often hear this in movies and TV programs as well. In fact, there is often a conceptual error in the term “psychopath” used in daily life, social interactions, and literary works. As the name implies, “neuropathy” refers to a disease of the nerves. Certain parts of the nervous system are attacked by inflammation, poisoning, trauma, tumor, vascular disease, degeneration, etc., causing damage and lesions, resulting in symptoms such as numbness, pain, paralysis, convulsions, coma, etc. This type of disease is called neuropathy. These lesions can occur in the brain and spinal cord of the central nerve, such as cerebral hemorrhage, polio, etc.; they can also occur in the peripheral nerves, such as distortion of the mouth and eyes (facial nerve paralysis), polyneuritis, etc. Generally speaking, these patients treat people and talk and behave as usual. They are generally not mentally deranged and show no obvious behavioral abnormalities. Obviously, the social term “neuropathy” does not refer to this disorder. The term “neurosis” actually refers to mental illness. What do we mean by psychosis? It starts with the human brain. We know that the human brain is the material basis of mental activity. Through biological evolution, through long-term production and social practice, the human brain gradually developed and perfected, with fine and complex functions, which is incomparable to any computer in the world today. Thus, human beings can not only understand the world and adapt to the environment, but also take the initiative to transform the world. If the brain is affected by harmful factors and becomes functionally disturbed, it is manifested as delirium and behavioral disorders, which is mental illness. In other words, there is a disorder of mental activity. It must be noted that some organic lesions of the brain, such as vascular sclerosis, infection, poisoning, trauma, tumors, etc., manifest both signs and symptoms of neurological damage and abnormal mental manifestations, and it is difficult to distinguish absolutely between psychosis and neuropathy. When suffering from psychosis, the patient may have an unfounded misconception that someone is trying to harm him, that his spouse has had an affair, and so on. In some cases, the patient is influenced by an illusory perception. The patient may hear people talking about him, accusing him, threatening him, see strange images, smell unpleasant smells, taste special flavors in food, feel that his body is electrified or controlled by some device. Some patients mainly show emotional abnormalities, either depressed, sad, sighing all day long, loss of joy in life, self-depreciation, self-blame and self-condemnation, or even pessimism and despair and suicide; or emotional excitement, talkative, restless, or even sudden impulsiveness for no reason. Not all mentally ill people are “haunted”. Those who are isolated, obviously socially withdrawn, and even very indifferent to their loved ones may also be mentally ill. Those who are demented, whether from childhood or in adulthood, have diminished intelligence, memory, comprehension, judgment, and arithmetic are all psychiatric patients. It is undeniable that the speech and behavior of the mentally ill are sometimes very absurd and bizarre, which are caused by the disease. We must not belittle them and make fun of them for this reason. To this day, there are still some people in society who make jokes, some actors in the film and television programs, cheekily and unseriously take the word “neurosis” as a sarcastic, ironic, squeezing people’s words, do not know that this is to make fun of other people’s suffering happy? I hope that after understanding the meaning of “neurosis”, people will understand its medical content and also realize the possible adverse social effects caused by its improper application.
