  3. (First decoction) Boil with high fire (martial fire), then keep boiling with low fire (civil fire) for about 30 minutes, until a small bowl (200-300ml) of liquid remains, decant.
  4. (Second decoction) Heat the water again, just dipping it over the surface of the medicine. Bring to a boil over high heat, then keep boiling for about 20 minutes over low heat (civil heat) until a small bowl (200-300ml) of liquid remains, then decant.
  5. Mix the two decanted liquids and divide into two portions, one in the morning and one in the evening, 30 minutes after meals.

  Special decoction method for some drugs
  (1) First decoction: Shells and ores, such as turtle plates, turtle nails and magnets, should be broken up and decocted first because of their hard texture and difficulty in getting out the taste. In addition, drugs with large sediment content such as Zao Xin Tu, glutinous rice root, etc., or drugs with light texture but large body such as Xia Ku Cao, Bai Mao Root, Bamboo Roo, etc., should be decocted first to obtain juice clarification, and then the rest of the drugs should be decocted in the juice.
  (2) After decoction: Drugs with aromatic odor, which take effect by their volatile oil, such as peppermint, sand, cardamom, etc., should be decocted when the general drug is ready, and 4-5 minutes of decoction is enough to prevent their active ingredients from being dissipated.
  (3) Wrap decoction: To prevent turbidity of the decoction and reduce the adverse stimulation of the drug to the digestive tract and throat, such as red stone resin, slippery stone, spinach, psyllium, loquat leaves, etc., the drug should be wrapped in gauze and then put into the pot for decoction.
  (4) Single decoction: Also known as another stew or another decoction, certain valuable drugs such as ginseng, American ginseng, rhinoceros horn (generation), antelope horn (generation), etc., can be decocted separately in order to preserve their active ingredients as much as possible and reduce the absorption by other drugs by decoction at the same time.
  (5) Melting: Gum, viscous and soluble drugs, such as gum, turtle gum, deer gum, honey, caramel, etc., should be melted with the liquid separately, or added to the decoction and then melted. Because it is easy to stick to the pot and cook scorched, and adhere to other drugs, affecting the decoction rate.
  (6) Punching: Dispersions, pills, water pills, natural juice, as well as certain precious drugs or aromatic drugs, need to be punched, such as musk, niu huang, panax pseudoginseng, six gods pills, raw dioscorea juice, etc.
