The presence of abnormalities in the position of the urethral opening in children can usually be diagnosed during a physical examination at birth. Parents can usually determine if their child has hypospadias by looking at the urethral opening, penile shape and urine flow. Generally, in children with hypospadias, the urethral opening is not at the tip of the penis and the penis curves downwards when erect, often wetting the trousers when standing up to urinate.
