What should I do if a senior citizen has liver cancer?

Master Zhang is 76 years old, has high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, diabetes for many years, has been internal medicine treatment, the body conditioning is quite good, usually go to the morning market, skating, climbing the three floors are okay. But recently, he felt discomfort in his abdomen, lack of energy and poor appetite. The family took the old man to the hospital and found that something had grown on his liver and he needed to be hospitalized for further examination and treatment. The family members were very nervous when they learned the news, what if he had liver cancer? How can we cure it at such an old age? After discussion, they decided to be hospitalized first. Subsequently, Mr. Zhang was admitted to the general surgery department of Tongren Hospital, the hepatobiliary specialty group. The attending physician of hepatobiliary surgery gave a clinical diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma after careful history taking, careful physical examination, analysis of laboratory results, combined with abdominal enhancement CT and other examinations. After the discussion of the specialized group, considering the old age and the combination of hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes and other geriatric diseases, the function of important organs such as heart, lung, liver and kidney were carefully evaluated and active treatment was recommended. Subsequently, the doctors of the treatment team organized a multidisciplinary consultation with experts from the Department of Anesthesiology, Department of Cardiology, Department of Respiratory Medicine and other related departments. After thorough and detailed discussion by experts and meticulous communication with the family, the treatment plan was finally formulated. The most effective treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma is still surgical resection, but considering the specific condition of the whole body and the family’s opinion (they thought the risk of surgery was too great and feared that the old man would not accept it), it was decided to adopt minimally invasive technology to perform laparoscopic radiofrequency treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. The advantage of this minimally invasive technique is that it is less traumatic to the old man and the blow is not as big as surgical resection, which is conducive to the recovery of the old man after the operation, while ensuring the treatment effect. The surgery lasted 1.5 hours and was a success! The day after the surgery, Mr. Zhang was able to sit up from the hospital bed and walk on the ground, and he was discharged from the hospital one week after the surgery. At present, surgical resection is the first choice for primary liver cancer treatment, however, about 80% of liver cancer patients cannot be treated surgically because of cirrhosis, poor liver function, intrahepatic metastasis or the presence of multicenter tumors, advanced age, advanced liver cancer and other reasons. Radiofrequency treatment has received wide attention due to its advantages of precise efficacy, low side effects, simple operation and multiple repetitions. Advantages of radiofrequency ablation treatment for liver cancer: 1. Especially for liver tumors below 3-5 cm in diameter, one treatment can completely kill the tumor tissues and achieve similar effects as surgical resection. But with less trauma, faster recovery and higher safety. It is suitable for patients with liver cancer who cannot tolerate or are unwilling to undergo open abdominal surgery, or patients with primary or metastatic liver cancer that is partially beyond surgical resection. It can be performed under local anesthesia by skin or laparoscopic puncture to the liver, with very little trauma, pain and side effects, and fast recovery after surgery (usually you can eat and move freely on the second day).
