Why do most children with scoliosis not need surgery?

In the heat of July, children finally have their summer break. Since summer time is relatively complete and there is no curriculum load, many parents take advantage of it to take their children to the hospital to do some health checkups that they couldn’t do while studying: scoliosis correction. We asked the experts to give us their advice on what to look for in the process of doing a health check. Early detection of scoliosis correction: observe whether the child’s scapulae are symmetrical on both sides when bending over. Most scoliosis patients are born with a normal spine, and the spine only gradually becomes curved as they grow and develop. Scoliosis mostly occurs in adolescents aged 10 to 16. Scoliosis is painless and difficult to detect early on if you don’t pay attention. “The easiest and most effective way to detect scoliosis is to have the child bend over and observe from behind whether his scapulae and back are symmetrical on both sides.” Parents are advised to watch for symmetry and localized bulges in the child’s back when bathing. Very few children with scoliosis require surgery: an important indicator for diagnosing scoliosis is measuring the Cobb angle of the child’s spine; a Cobb angle greater than 10° is diagnosed as scoliosis. Parents are reminded never to be intimidated by the diagnosis and make a hasty decision to have surgery. In fact, a Cobb angle of 10° is a very mild form of scoliosis. “Although the incidence of scoliosis is as high as 3 in 1,000, only 3 in 1,000 of all children with scoliosis require treatment (including bracing and surgery). Most children with scoliosis under 25° need only regular follow-up, and of those who need treatment, very few need surgery.” Don’t reject surgery: If the scoliosis deformity is really serious, then is surgery necessarily the best option? “The child’s appearance deformity is not obvious, and does not affect daily life and learning, such cases do not necessarily need surgery.” Some children with scoliosis are very satisfied with the immediate results of surgery, but regret it a year or two after the operation. Because the surgery requires fusion of the spine, the child’s activities are limited after surgery, and simple daily activities such as bending and squatting may become difficult. Of course, if a child’s scoliosis reaches the indications for surgery: large scoliosis angle, obvious appearance of spinal deformity, rapid progression of scoliosis, and scoliosis affecting daily life, then surgery is needed. Now scoliosis correction surgery technology has become more mature, the surgery is safer and more effective, parents should not be afraid and reject surgery at this time. Scoliosis less than 25 degrees do not need to wear braces: those children with a small scoliosis angle, do you need to wear braces to correct the treatment? Many parents are concerned that their child’s spine will grow more crooked and want to give their child a brace to slow or stop the progression of scoliosis, but they are concerned that it is inconvenient for the child to wear a brace. Don’t put your child in a brace as soon as you find scoliosis. In general, children with scoliosis less than 25 degrees do not need to wear a brace, but they need to be observed. In the course of long-term clinical work, we found that many children with mild scoliosis were surprised to find that the scoliosis disappeared after a period of observation and follow-up. This indicates that the spine can return to normal as the child matures and changes bad habits and corrects sitting posture during the development process. Zheng Zhaomin said, indiscriminately as long as the scoliosis to wear brace practice is not scientific. Because the brace treatment needs long-term persistence, and long-term wearing brace is very hard, especially the hot weather in Guangzhou, sweating, brace will make the child very uncomfortable.
