Osteoporosis risk to prevent

Bones are the backbone of human mobility, allowing us to enjoy a normal life, to travel in all directions, to enjoy the charm of nature. Keeping our bones healthy should be a focus of our attention, especially for breast cancer patients. The health of our bones is related to the estrogen level in our body. Estrogen is the “bone guardian” in our body, and its job is to stop the loss of calcium from our bones and ensure that they remain healthy. Breast cancer is known to be an estrogen-dependent tumor, and people with high estrogen levels are more likely to be attacked by breast cancer. Women who are obese, not having children or breastfeeding, early menarche and late menopause are all factors that can cause your estrogen levels to be higher and your chances of breast cancer to occur are a little higher. In addition, some women who take estrogen supplements for a long time after menopause can also cause elevated estrogen levels, which increases the risk of breast cancer. In the process of breast cancer treatment, if the source of estrogen is cut off or counteracted, the tumor cells will stop or slow down their growth, which is the theoretical basis of endocrine therapy for breast cancer. Breast cancer treatment requires suppressing or cutting off estrogen, which is our “bone guardian”, thus creating a conflict between the two. Bone health is so important and breast cancer treatment is not urgent, what should be done? It is true that endocrine therapy for breast cancer can lead to bone loss, but breast cancer patients should not refuse to use endocrine therapy because of this reason. It is because the correct endocrine therapy can significantly prolong the survival of breast cancer patients, and it is because of the prolonged survival that the chronic disease of osteoporosis has a chance to manifest itself. To give up endocrine therapy in order to reduce the risk of osteoporosis is definitely an act of losing much for little. So, what are the ways to reduce the risk of osteoporosis during the endocrine treatment of breast cancer? Doctors suggest: firstly, patients can take some calcium and vitamin D supplements appropriately and exercise more reasonably; secondly, according to the doctor’s instruction, they should go to hospital for bone density test regularly and choose different levels of anti-osteoporosis treatment in different treatment stages, and if necessary, they can use calcitonin, active vitamin D or bisphosphonates to stop bone loss; finally, when choosing drugs for endocrine treatment, they can consider choosing medications with a lower risk of causing osteoporosis. Of course, all of these should follow the guidance of a clinician. For us to have a healthy body and enjoy a good life, healthy bones are the supporting force. For breast cancer patients, bone health is even more important. Therefore, when choosing endocrine therapy, patients must take the right steps to prevent the risk of osteoporosis. On the basis of having healthy bones and actively fighting against cancer, so that they can continue to appreciate the charm of nature and perceive the beauty of life.
