What is the general knowledge of thyroid nodules?

What is a thyroid nodule? A thyroid nodule is a nodular lesion that appears in the thyroid tissue. In essence, nodules are only a morphological description and include tumors, cysts, masses of normal tissue or other diseases that cause thyroid lumps. Therefore, the diagnosis of thyroid nodules cannot be based on laboratory tests or physical examination alone, but requires a combination of medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, and even pathological examination. Thyroid nodules can be classified as single nodules or multiple nodules based on ultrasound findings, while thyroid nodules can be classified as hot nodules, cool nodules and cold nodules based on isotope findings. Generally speaking, surgery is recommended for all thyroid nodules over 1 cm in diameter, especially those over 1.5 cm. Nodules between 1-1.5 cm in diameter can be treated with thyroxine preparations for 6-9 months on a trial basis, and if the nodule shrinks or does not continue to increase in size, surgery can be withheld. However, nodules with sand-like calcifications found by ultrasound, or nodules with papillary hyperplasia or suspected cancer found by puncture need to be operated regardless of size.
