Can thyroid nodules be cured?

Cystic nodules are usually curable, but those that are prone to recurrence (even if they are cystic) will require surgical intervention and a period of post-operative thyroid hormone medication. Removal of the lesion is not strictly speaking a cure. The current international medical controversy is whether benign nodules can be treated with levothyroxine, whether the growth of nodules is associated with thyrotropin and whether treatment with levothyroxine tablets (L-T4) is effective. Some literature suggests that the above therapies have little success in children and adults with normal thyroid function; they have not been found to be effective in chronic autoimmune thyroiditis to date. There has been some success in people with hypothyroidism.
