Can drinking soda combat gout?

Soda is actually a diluted sodium bicarbonate solution. Regular consumption of soda can promote the elimination of uric acid, thereby reducing blood uric acid levels. Gout is a condition in which uric acid is precipitated and deposited in the joints or kidneys and other parts of the body, triggering painful attacks. The main purpose of sodium bicarbonate tablets for gout patients is to alkalize urine, increase uric acid excretion, prevent the formation of kidney stones, and reduce the damage of uric acid salts on kidney function. However, it is not recommended to take sodium bicarbonate tablets as a long-term uric acid-lowering drug. Because any drug has a range of application, only the following cases are suitable for sodium bicarbonate tablets: 1, after the onset of acute arthritis Acute arthritis is often preceded by a peak in blood uric acid, when uric acid in the urine also increases. When acute arthritis attacks, due to the severe pain in the joints, reflexively cause the pituitary gland to accelerate the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormones. Therefore, the acute arthritis period and 5~10 days after arthritis is the stage when uric acid concentration in urine is relatively high, and it is very necessary to use sodium bicarbonate tablets during this period. 2. When the blood uric acid level is significantly increased with uric acid excretory drugs Under the condition that the kidney function is normal or not seriously damaged, the concentration of uric acid is often positively correlated with the level of blood uric acid and the dosage of uric acid excretory drugs applied to promote uric acid excretion. In other words, the higher the blood uric acid, the higher the dosage of uric acid excretory drugs, and the higher the concentration of uric acid in the urine. Therefore, when the blood uric acid is increased and the uric acid excretory drugs are used at the same time, the use of sodium bicarbonate tablets can help to alkalize the urine and reduce the precipitation of uric acid crystals, which can protect the kidney from damage. 3, when kidney stones are formed Some statistics show that the ratio of kidney stones after the appearance of gout arthritis and before the occurrence of arthritis is 3:2. urinary stones can cause hematuria, renal colic, or no symptoms. Regardless of when the kidney stone occurs and whether it is symptomatic or not, as long as it is accompanied by hyperuricemia, appropriate use of sodium bicarbonate tablets is necessary. Because using sodium bicarbonate tablets can improve the pH of urine, which can dissolve uric acid stones and also prevent the formation of new uric acid stones. 4.When urine pH decreases Uric acid exists in the urine in both free and bound forms, and the amount of both states of uric acid depends on the pH of urine acidity. Normal human urine is slightly acidic, with a pH of about 6. When the pH of urine is at 6.75, more than 90% of uric acid is in the free state; when the pH drops to 4.75, more than 90% of uric acid is in the bound form in the urine. This bound form of uric acid can be deposited in the kidney parenchyma, blocking the urinary tract, or forming stones that can damage kidney function. It is generally accepted that when the pH drops below 5.5, sodium bicarbonate tablets can be used to maintain the pH at 6.2 to 6.8, with values not exceeding 7.0, otherwise calcium salt stones are likely to occur. Sodium bicarbonate tablets are not suitable for patients with cardiac insufficiency, renal insufficiency, and hypertension, because excessive sodium load will aggravate the condition. In summary, soda (sodium bicarbonate water) can prevent gout, but we should pay attention to the clinical indications and contraindications, as well as the dosage to be used. The most scientific way is to regularly monitor the urinary PH value, so that soda can play its anti-gout role more reasonably and effectively.
