You should know that the number of follicles in a woman is fixed at birth and no more new follicles are produced after birth. The other follicles are inhibited by inhibitory factors, stop growing and degenerate into atretic follicles. Some follicles are sensitive to low FSH, while others are not, so the sensitive follicles move on to the next stage of growth and eventually develop into mature follicles. Ovulation promotion, on the other hand, increases the dose of FSH so that some of the insensitive follicles, i.e. atretic follicles, enter the sensitive stage and grow further to reach the standard of mature follicles, thus ovulation promotion can result in more follicles than natural cycles. Of course, the process of ovulation promotion is also a process of further recruitment, and if the developing follicle does not follow closely the development of the dominant follicle, then it still does not eventually become a mature follicle. The ovulation process only pulls the follicles that should have gone into atresia back into the growth queue using medication and does not deplete the stock of eggs or cause premature ovarian failure.
