Can a cyst in the brain get worse?

Having a cyst in the brain usually does not worsen, but as the cyst increases in size it may cause the cyst wall to become thinner and may easily cause the cyst to rupture. Patients with large intracerebral cysts may compress brain tissue causing brain cell edema, which may lead to high cranial pressure, and patients may exhibit headache nausea, vomiting, and may even cause impaired consciousness. Patients may also cause somatic signs and symptoms, which may include lateral limb sensory deficits, motor deficits, and possibly speech dysfunction and visual deficits. If the cyst is in the cerebellar brainstem it can manifest as dizziness, balance disorder, ataxia, and in severe cases it may also cause brain herniation leading to the death of the patient, and if necessary, a specialist should be consulted in brain surgery.
