In cases of nasal mucosal erosion close to the external nose, the nostrils can be slightly enlarged and a mirror can be looked at to reveal a mucosal break in the nose presenting as a moist surface of skin damage.
The nasal vestibule, nasal cavity and sinuses can usually be examined by the anterior rhinoscopy method to see if the surface of the nasal mucosa appears abnormal. Nasal mucosal erosions are most often due to inflammation and can also be due to allergic rhinitis and can be examined for abnormalities in eosinophils by smears of nasal secretions.
