Because the nasal mucosa is rich in sensory nerve endings, increased secretion of mucus glands during nasal mucosal erosion produces a special sensation known as nasal itchiness in addition to nasal runny nose, and nasal itchiness produces a protective reflex action – sneezing – through nerve conduction.
The most common irritants for sneezing are dust, pollutants, nasal inflammation and infection, and one of the most common causes of nasal mucosal erosion is nasal inflammation. It is also important to note that occasional sneezing is usually normal and physiological and should not be a cause for concern, but recurrent and frequent sneezing should be taken seriously.
