Precautions for taking oral iron

For patients with iron deficiency anemia, we usually use oral iron therapy, but while taking iron, we need to pay attention to the following points: 1. Iron supplements are suitable for taking after meals. Because food can prolong the residence time of iron in the intestinal tract, it can make iron fully absorbed by the body, and also reduce the stimulation of the stomach and intestines. 2, oral iron supplements should not be combined with antacids, such as proglutamine, cimetidine, ranitidine, etc., and alkaline drugs are also not suitable, such as gastrodia, aminophylline, aluminum hydroxide, etc., otherwise it will affect the absorption of iron. In addition, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, atropine, vitamin E, oral contraceptives, etc. should not be used in combination with iron. 3, during the medication should eat more fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C or take vitamin C tablets to promote the absorption of iron. Avoid eating peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, strong tea, coffee, etc., so as not to destroy the active ingredients of iron. 4, iron combined with hydrogen sulfide in the gastrointestinal tract will make the stool black in color, which can be easily mistaken for black stool caused by upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Patients should know in advance to avoid unnecessary panic. 5, taking iron is likely to cause constipation, because iron causes intestinal peristalsis to weaken, so it is required to eat more fiber-rich food, such as green vegetables, in order to keep the stool open.
