What is maximal androgen blockade?

Maximal androgen blockade therapy (MAB) refers to depot plus anti-androgen drugs. There are two main categories of anti-androgen drugs: one is steroids and the other is non-steroids. Currently, non-steroidal drugs are mainly applied clinically. Studies have shown that the application of MAB including steroidal anti-androgen drugs can prolong overall survival by 3-6 months compared to debulking alone. For limited prostate cancer, the longer the application of MAB treatment, the lower the PSA recurrence rate. In contrast, MAB treated with combined anti-androgen drugs reduced the risk of death by 20% relative to debulking alone and prolonged progression-free survival.
