How is carotid artery stenosis treated?

For asymptomatic patients, when the degree of stenosis is less than 50%, only medication can be given; when the stenosis exceeds 50% and there are corresponding symptoms, it is better to use surgical or interventional methods to re-establish blood flow; when the stenosis exceeds 70%, active treatment is recommended to re-establish blood flow regardless of whether there have been symptoms or not; when the occlusion of the cerebral blood supply artery is found, some patients may only be treated with medication due to the help of other neighboring When occlusion of the cerebral blood supply artery is detected, some patients may be treated with medication only for maintenance due to the help of other adjacent vessels, while others should undergo intracranial and extracranial artery bypass surgery. Carotid artery stenosis can be treated surgically (e.g., carotid endarterectomy) or interventionally (e.g., endovascular stenting).
