Abdominal pain caused by lead poisoning may be related to used batteries

Recently, a patient with abdominal pain was transferred from Yixing to the eastern part of the city hospital. The patient’s abdominal pain was different from that of ordinary internal medicine patients. When there was no pain, there was no discomfort at all, while once the abdominal pain came on, the pain was very severe. After a consultation with hospital experts, the patient’s serum iron and urine iron levels were checked and lead levels were found to be over the limit. How could lead poisoning occur? After repeated questioning by experts, it turned out that the patient’s family usually collects used batteries, which are often put in the drawer together with food. In this way, the food might be contaminated with the lead on the used batteries. It is understood that chronic lead poisoning will not only cause abdominal pain, but also lead to anemia, abnormal liver function and other serious consequences. Experts suggest that used household batteries must be put away, especially not with food, and it is best to put them into special battery recycling bins.
