Chronic abdominal pain and constipation, beware of lead poisoning

People often think that abdominal pain and constipation must be a gastrointestinal problem, but for people who take medicine for a long time with poor results, they should beware of the presence of lead poisoning. In the past, it was believed that lead poisoning mostly occurred in industrial and mining enterprises such as lead mines and storage batteries. However, with the rapid development of China’s economy, people are increasingly exposed to lead pollution and have long-term exposure to tin foil, whitening cosmetics, hair dyes, lead-containing batteries, paints, etc. in their lives, as well as lead intake in their daily diet (average daily dietary intake of lead is about 100-300ug). The base value of lead in people’s body gradually increases. Under normal conditions, 90% of the lead absorbed in the body is stored in the bones and muscles and does not cause disease. But when the disease state or the lack of iron, calcium, phosphorus and other trace elements in the body, the lead absorption capacity increases greatly, and at the same time the lead stored in the bones is released into the blood, which can cause lead poisoning. Recently, we have admitted many patients with unexplained long-term abdominal pain and constipation to our hospital, and after examination, there is no digestive system disease, and the general treatment effect is not good. The urine lead exceeds the standard or the lead repellent test is positive, and after regular lead repellent treatment, the abdominal pain is reduced and the symptoms are relieved, and these people are not traditional workers in the lead work industry. Therefore, lead is no longer far away from us, it is all around us. Lead has toxic effects on all systems and organs of the body, and depending on the exposure concentration and absorbed dose, it can develop within days, months to years of exposure, and can be asymptomatic or only manifest as loss of appetite, abdominal distension and constipation. In severe cases, sudden onset of abdominal cramps, pallor, curled position, and even intestinal obstruction may occur. Because of its prominent gastrointestinal symptoms, it is easy to be misdiagnosed or delayed in treatment. In daily life, the main way of lead absorption is through the digestive tract and respiratory tract, and digestive symptoms such as abdominal pain and constipation are often the first symptoms of lead poisoning. Therefore, we suggest that people with abdominal pain and constipation need to be alerted to the presence of lead poisoning and should promptly seek medical attention to test blood lead and urine lead, or conduct diagnostic lead repellent tests to avoid delaying treatment. For people who have been exposed to lead pollution for a long time, they need to raise their awareness of self-protection, attend occupational physical examinations and regularly monitor the level of lead in their bodies. At the same time, change the diet structure appropriately, eat high-quality protein, such as meat and eggs, fish and shrimp and soybean products, with vitamin-rich fruits, to slow down the symptoms of lead poisoning, reduce the absorption of lead and promote the excretion of lead. Lead poisoning in pregnant women can lead to serious consequences such as miscarriage and infant stunting. According to the research of American scholars, the absorption rate of lead in children is 5-10%, among which 1% of children have lead poisoning, and their respiratory and digestive tract absorption is higher than that of adults, mainly showing symptoms such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity and delayed language development. Excessive lead in the body can also interfere with the function of the immune system, damage the retina, reduce the ability to sense light, and cause insomnia, dizziness, joint and muscle pain, numbness of the terminal limbs and anemia. Due to the great health hazards, we need to pay enough attention and concern, raise awareness of protection and strengthen self-protection.
