What is scoliosis?

Let’s first understand what scoliosis is. In a word, a normal standing person whose spine deviates from the central axis when observed in the anterior-posterior position is called scoliosis. Patients with scoliosis, depending on the degree of bending, and different performance, light patients, wearing clothes may not be obvious, but take off clothes when standing or bending forward, the back can be observed on both sides of the back of the spine asymmetrical flat. Patients with moderate scoliosis, often accompanied by the side of the scoliosis of the rib cage convexity abnormal, the formation of “Liu Luo pot”, commonly known as “razor back”, the loss of the normal human physique. Because of the fear of other people’s jokes and contempt, they dare not wear beautiful fashion that reflects the beauty of the shape, and rarely or not dare to participate in bodybuilding and sports, such as swimming. Patients often have a strong inferiority complex, patients and families often need to bear great psychological pressure, serious patients, the appearance is particularly obvious, according to different types of scoliosis and parts (neck section, chest section, thoracolumbar section, waist section) can appear one shoulder high, one shoulder low, the body to one side, the pelvis is also high on one side and low on the other, imbalance, lower limbs are not equal, especially can be clearly seen somewhere in the back of the chest protrude A large piece of the back of the chest and a large depression in another place exist, and the front chest is also uneven, with obvious asymmetry on both sides. In severe cases, because of the deformation of the thoracic rib cage, which restricts the respiratory movement, pulmonary dysfunction can occur, and the lack of oxygen and cyanosis after slight exercise, which in turn affects the heart function, and heart failure occurs. When the scoliosis further develops beyond 100 degrees, the spinal nerve is compressed, and some patients may also develop neurological symptoms, including numbness, weakness, and muscle atrophy in the lower extremities in the mild cases, and paraplegia in the severe cases. This shows that scoliosis brings great harm to the physical and mental health of human beings. What is the cause of such a harmful disease? Unfortunately, the cause of scoliosis is still unclear. Medical science broadly classifies scoliosis as congenital and idiopathic. Congenital refers to abnormalities in the structure of the spine, i.e., birth with triangular hemivertebrae, butterfly vertebrae, fused vertebrae, and abnormal rib development, resulting in a tilted spine, leading to scoliosis or kyphosis. In idiopathic scoliosis, the spinal structure is basically not abnormal, but due to the imbalance of neuromuscular forces, the original physiological curvature of the spine becomes pathological curvature, i.e., the original thoracic lordosis becomes lateral lordosis. Early detection, timely and correct treatment is the best way to avoid major physical and psychological injuries caused by scoliosis. The treatment of scoliosis is mainly divided into surgical and non-surgical treatment. Early detection is generally from conservative treatment, after clinically proven effective conservative treatment is orthopedic brace external fixation treatment, wearing orthopedic external fixation brace at the same time to regularly check the spine x-ray, closely observe the changes in the degree of spinal curvature. Reasonable physical exercise exercises, correction of inappropriate sitting and sleeping posture can play a supporting role in the conservative treatment to varying degrees. There is no definitive evidence of effective treatment with Chinese massage and acupuncture. Depending on the type and development of scoliosis, if conservative treatment is ineffective and scoliosis keeps getting worse, surgery should be taken at the right time. The best time for surgery is during adolescence. Scoliosis surgery is an extremely demanding surgical procedure and can be considered the pinnacle of the field of spinal surgery. It requires a high level of three-dimensional spatial correction techniques and requires a high level of demand on all aspects of the surgeon, cooperating surgeons, and postoperative care, so it is especially important to choose a trustworthy surgeon and a surgical team that you can trust. A lot of discrimination comes from ignorance and lack of understanding. One day, when we meet someone walking with a bent back again, we hope that we will look at them less differently and be more tolerant and caring. Because scoliosis patients have already suffered too much, they have the right to enjoy all that we healthy people enjoy.
