We often say that gouty arthritis is the most painful form of arthritis, with the onset of red, swollen and painful joints that are untouchable and affect walking. Patients who have had gout often use words like “pain like a knife” and “unbearable pain” to describe the degree of joint pain, which is evident in the degree of pain in gouty arthritis. Since the occurrence of gout is mostly related to the consumption of alcohol and purine-rich foods such as animal offal and seafood, failure to control diet is often the cause of recurrent gout attacks. In the hot summer, people often like to go out at night to cool off, and it has become a common summer scene to drink cold beer, eat crawfish and grill meat skewers with family and friends at the street stalls. However, for patients who have already had an attack of gouty arthritis, or friends with high uric acid, frequent drinking and snacking at stalls in summer can cause recurrent attacks of gout, resulting in red, swollen and painful joints, or even broken bones in the joints, resulting in disability. So how to prevent gout attacks is very important, in addition to the control of diet that we all know, drinking more water is also a very good way. The Chinese medicine as early as 2,000 years ago on the gout knowledge, “Huangdi Neijing” has recorded that: “the change of the paste sorghum, the foot grows big boils”, which means that once people eat “paste sorghum thick taste” too much, will lead to the foot grows “big boils The “boils”. Here the “thick taste of sorghum” refers to excessive drinking and eating meat. Chinese medicine believes that excessive intake of wine and meat, which have a strong odor, will increase the burden on the spleen and stomach, affect their functions of transportation and transformation, and breed the evil of dampness and heat. The damp-heat evil accumulates in the joints of the limbs and affects the flow of qi and blood, resulting in internal stasis of blood and pain when it does not pass, thus causing redness, swelling and heat pain in the joints. Since the presence of damp-heat evil in the body, we need to discharge this evil out of the body, Chinese medicine believes that the stool and urine are two ways to discharge damp-heat evil, so drinking more water is particularly important. On the one hand, drinking more water can accelerate blood circulation, dilute the concentration of uric acid in the blood, reduce the content of uric acid crystals deposited in the joints; on the other hand, drinking more water can increase the amount of urination, while flushing the intestines, to ensure the smooth flow of stool. This is consistent with modern medical research which found that uric acid is metabolized out of the body mainly through the urine and intestines. Therefore, we suggest that for patients who have had an attack of gouty arthritis, if they do not have serious cardiovascular, hepatic, renal or pulmonary diseases, they should drink about 2000ml of water daily, have 2 bowel movements daily and have a smooth bowel movement, but not diarrhea. For those who have not yet had an attack of gouty arthritis, but have high blood uric acid, or who prefer to drink alcohol and eat purine-rich foods, drinking 1500ml of water daily and having a bowel movement once a day is necessary to effectively reduce the uric acid content and prevent recurrent attacks of gouty arthritis. The Jin Dynasty physician Ge Hong once said: “To live long, the intestines are long and clear”, and drinking more water is one of the effective ways to ensure that the intestines are long and clear.
