Medication is not suitable for children who are relatively difficult to treat and whose symptoms are particularly severe or for older children. First of all, autism itself is a developmental disorder that cannot be directly cured by medication. Medication is actually symptomatic treatment, which means that certain symptoms of autism, such as being very stereotypical, can be treated. Autism is characterized by three major features: the first is social interaction disorder, the second is speech and language development disorder, and the third is stereotyped behavior and narrow interests. For example, if the child’s behavior is very stereotyped, similar to OCD, and the child has to do something in that state and manner, the stereotyped behavior will affect the child’s daily life, so we can use some medication to correct the child. In addition, some autistic children have inattention problems and sleep problems, so we can also use some medication. However, it is not true that autism can be cured by medication alone.
