Does viral encephalitis heal on its own?

The vast majority of viral encephalitis does not heal spontaneously, but some patients with viral encephalitis do heal spontaneously in clinical practice. Common types of viral encephalitis include herpes simplex virus encephalitis, herpes zoster virus encephalitis, and enteroviral encephalitis. Herpes simplex viral encephalitis is the more serious type. Patients can develop fever and headache rapidly after the onset of the disease, and if not treated promptly, the symptoms can progress quickly, with patients experiencing impaired consciousness, seizures and convulsions, and eventually death due to extensive brain necrosis and cerebral edema. Enteroviral encephalitis mostly develops in summer, with mild symptoms of fever and headache, and a few severe cases may have seizures and confusion, most patients can spontaneously resolve after 2-3 weeks of illness, and belong to the self-healing viral encephalitis.
