Encephalitis usually requires hospitalization for a few days

The length of hospitalization for encephalitis is related to the cause, severity of the disease, the patient’s physical condition, the presence of complications, etc. Generally, viral encephalitis requires 14-21 days of hospitalization. Common causes of encephalitis include viral, bacterial, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, fungal and other pathogenic infections. Other causes are allergic diseases such as autoimmune encephalitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Usually the so-called encephalitis refers to viral encephalitis, and its hospitalization is mainly antiviral treatment and symptomatic treatment, which includes bed rest, keeping the airway open, oxygen and sputum aspiration if necessary, keeping warm, supplying certain water, nutrition and electrolytes, reducing cerebral edema, anti-seizure, and preventing complications, etc. It usually takes 14-21 days. If the degree of encephalitis is more severe and complications are more frequent, the amount of time for treatment will be relatively longer. Patients with encephalitis present with coma and respiratory failure, indicating a poor prognosis. Some patients may be left with sequelae such as muscle paralysis, epilepsy, limb paralysis, and mental retardation.
