Pharmacological treatment of osteoporosis

  Pharmacological treatment of osteoporosis: not as simple as calcium supplementation alone! Basic bone health supplements: calcium and vitamin D; anti-osteoporosis drugs: bisphosphonates, calcitonin, estrogen, etc. How to supplement calcium Normal adult supplementation: 800mg /d; postmenopausal women and elderly: 1000mg /d (elderly people in China consume about 400mg /d of food and need additional elemental calcium supplementation: 500-600mg /d).  Note: Medicated calcium supplementation with Calcium D is preferred and does not increase the risk of stones.  How to supplement vitamin D The recommended dose is 200 units/d for adults and 400-800 units/d for the elderly, and 800-1200 units/d when used for the treatment of osteoporosis.
