When we think of hybrid technology, we may think of hybrid rice, but there is also hybrid technology in the medical field. Recently, our cardiothoracic surgery department, with the cooperation of ultrasound department, anesthesiology department and operation room, successfully cured a child with congenital heart disease – atrial septal defect combined with arteriovenous ductus arteriosus – by applying “Hybrid” technology again. One-year-old Xiao Yu was found to have congenital heart disease after birth. In the past year, he suffered from frequent pneumonia and poor development. After an examination in the cardiothoracic surgery department, Xiao Yu had an atrial septal defect combined with an unclosed ductus arteriosus, and his entire heart was enlarged. Dr. Haiyong Wang, the doctor in charge, introduced that traditionally, the child’s surgery is performed in two steps: first, the arterial duct is ligated in an open-chest incision on the left side; later, the atrial septal defect is repaired in a second open-chest incision under extracorporeal circulation. The disadvantage is that it is more invasive, the surgery is performed in two steps, the operation time and recovery time are long, and the economic cost is high. After discussion, the doctors decided to use hybrid surgery to cure Xiao Yu’s heart disease in one visit. First, he was placed in the right lateral position, and the arterial catheter was ligated through a small incision in the left chest; then he changed his surgical position and, with the assistance of Chen Hui, deputy director of the ultrasound department, ultrasound-guided blocking of the atrial septal defect was performed through a small incision on the right side of the sternum. The whole procedure took less than 2 hours. Dr. Zhenzong Du of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery introduced that the “hybrid surgery” carried out by the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of our hospital not only has the advantages of convenient positioning and high safety that conventional open-heart surgery does not have, but also has small trauma, both incisions are only about 2 cm, and the child recovers quickly after surgery. The two surgeries are solved in just one visit, greatly saving the financial burden of the child’s family. The concept of Hybrid surgery integrates a variety of treatment tools, which truly achieves a win-win-win situation for patients, doctors and hospitals: for patients, it reduces pain and saves money; for doctors, they can judge the effect of interventions in a timely manner during surgery, which has unique advantages for the treatment of heart disease; for hospitals, it can better improve patient services and enhance the image of hospitals. Heart hybridization surgery integrates the strengths of our hospital and brings together multidisciplinary experts on a “stage” to perform a “new movement” in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, allowing the majority of cardiovascular disease patients to get the maximum benefit. With the successful implementation of our cardiac hybridization surgery, it marks the start of a new model of cardiovascular disease treatment, which will have a good demonstration effect on the development of cardiovascular disease treatment.
