There is currently a shortage of heart transplant donors, and it is impossible to determine the waiting time, which ranges from weeks to years. Heart transplantation is a treatment for patients with a variety of end-stage heart disease and heart failure for which conservative treatments have failed, and the primary source of donors is determined to be brain-dead patients who donate and require a successful match. Unlike liver and kidney transplants, where only brain-dead patients can be heart donors, liver and kidney transplant donors can come from heart-dead patients. The low percentage of brain-dead patients and the rigorous evaluation system required make heart transplant donors scarcer and the waiting time longer. If a patient is in need of a heart transplant, he or she should consult a doctor and register for one, and should follow the doctor’s instructions while waiting for the transplant.
