How long does it take to stop taking febuxostat?

There is no specific time frame for stopping febuxostat, as it depends on the severity of the gout, the level of uric acid in the patient’s blood after taking the drug, and the responsiveness to the drug. Febuxostat can reduce blood uric acid and dissolve urate crystals, and is widely used in the treatment of gout and hyperuricemia. If the patient has been suffering from gout for a short period of time, has mild symptoms of gout attacks, has mild to moderate elevation of blood uric acid level, and can strictly control the diet, the blood uric acid level can be controlled within 3 months to 6 months after taking febuxostat, and then the drug can be gradually reduced or discontinued. If the patient has been suffering from the disease for a long time, has severe gout attacks, has significantly elevated uric acid levels, or has developed gout stones and liver and kidney impairment, he/she will need to receive febuxostat for a longer period of time, and even long-term medication for those with severe disease. Therefore, patients with gout who are taking febuxostat should not reduce and stop the medication on their own, but should seek the guidance of their physicians for regular follow-ups, and should follow a strict low purine diet, live a regular life and avoid straining during the medication period.
