For intermittent claudication due to lumbar disc herniation, if it is a first episode or if surgery is not possible, consider trying conservative treatment first, with strict bed rest for about 3 weeks, along with oral NSAIDs such as aspirin, together with physiotherapy and pelvic traction, etc. Many patients can have effective relief of their symptoms. after 3 weeks they can gradually move down with a lumbar brace. If the patient has recurrent symptoms with severe pain, and conservative treatment is not effective after more than six months, surgery may be required.
