Intermittent claudication in children requires attention to the presence of diseases such as aortitis and lumbar spinal stenosis. In aortitis, the arterial supply to the limb is poor and intermittent claudication may be the first symptom. Some children may have congenital lumbar spinal stenosis, which may also cause intermittent claudication due to compression of the nerves. However, it is important to note that not all lameness can be described as intermittent claudication. Fractures, osteomyelitis and synovitis of the hip can cause sudden onset of lameness in children due to pain, and a visit to the paediatrician is recommended for differentiation.
