This is a case of demodicosis. The nail matrix temporarily stops producing nail plates for various reasons, resulting in a discontinuity between the new nail plate and the existing one. Common triggers are trauma and paediatric hand, foot and mouth disease. Chemotherapy, high fever and severe drug rash can also cause demodicosis.
