Grey nails can be seen as irregular cloudy areas of the nail plate, which can spread to the whole nail plate, with loosening and thickening of the nail. Some types of fungal infections can be combined with nail infections, with redness and swelling of the skin around the nail and painful pressure. The nail is dark black, raised and separated from the underlying nail bed, or the entire nail plate may be affected.
