For small acne scars (not “craters”), shallow wrinkles (not “trenches”), blemishes, bumps, and slightly displeased redness of the skin, peels can be performed with fruit acids or salicylic acid. A peel? That’s right just as you’d expect. The acid destroys the epidermal layer of the skin, which peels off to reveal new, healthy skin. It also promotes the growth of collagen and elastin in the dermis, leaving your face looking cleaner, firmer, and more elastic. Fruit acid or salicylic acid peels will not smooth out deep wrinkles. Nor are you likely to wake up with skin that looks like your five-year-old niece’s. But your skin will still look pink, your complexion will look better, and you’ll have fewer wrinkles and pits. But most doctors will have you use a retinoid(1) ointment for a few weeks before the peel What does this do? A retinoid ointment is like that – a primer you use before you paint to make sure the color (in this case, the acid) is smooth and even. If you have a peel, your skin will be slightly red when you leave the hospital. This phenomenon is normal and candidates need not worry about it and do not need to use the cream immediately. However, you should use the moisturizing cream that your doctor told you to use one by one only. One candidate used various moisturizers on her freshly peeled skin, which brought about a terrible infection and permanent scarring. Over the course of the next 2 weeks, your skin will peel. Since this peel doesn’t involve the deeper layers of skin, the peeling won’t be too severe, similar to that brought on by a mild sunburn, so you won’t be scaring the little ones, and you won’t need to take any time off after the peel. After three weeks, you’ll be able to see the results of your peel. If you like the current crystalline look of your skin and want further improvement in skin texture, you can have another peel. People usually undergo three to five light peels to get the desired results, with a month’s interval between each. However, it is important to remember to use sunscreen every day, as the skin is more susceptible to sunburn after a peel.
