The Joy of Pediatric Surgeons

—Dr. Peña, a world-renowned expert in pediatric surgery, is an honorable profession, and even more so when it can alleviate the suffering and improve the quality of life of others. Pediatric surgeons are active advocates and key forces in saving children’s lives and improving their quality of life, which inspires many people to aspire to become a pediatric surgeon. Yang Jinlong, Pediatric Surgeon, Wuxi Eighth People’s Hospital When a surgeon operates on a child with a relatively simple condition and sees the child smile at him during a check-up the next day, there is no doubt that the surgeon has improved a person’s life. In the sacred teachings of some important religions, there is a statement about the importance of saving a life: To save a life is to save the life of all mankind. It is often said that becoming a surgeon requires a lot of sacrifice and a lot of limitations in life, such as long working hours, no time to spend with family or enjoy the pleasures of sports and hobbies, etc. I disagree with this statement. I believe that practicing medicine and doing surgery is a joy for those who are passionate about their medical career. And ideally, only such people can enjoy it. I like to humorously say that surgeons can be divided into two categories, those who are able to enjoy surgery and those who endure the pain of doing it day in and day out. In the latter category, I have never met a good, creative surgeon. If you choose a job that you enjoy, you will not work a single day in your life. As Confucius wrote in Analects. Yongye”, he wrote: “Those who know are better than those who are good, and those who are good are better than those who are happy. While society as a whole is constantly changing, doctors all have to go to work in hospitals. Hospitals are a special place where children and parents suffer – they have to face serious illnesses, which many times are incurable and can have a great impact on the future of the child. The operating room, or hospital ward, can give us a unique perspective on the problems that exist in the world. In the ward, when we try our best to heal a child, the world and all its calamities seem to be irrelevant to us. When a child is suffering in a hospital room, and his parents are looking at their child with love and compassion while enduring great psychological torture, the room becomes the center of the universe. When the child’s life is in danger, the world of the parents’ family seems to revolve around the ward. It is in the operating room that the surgeons humbly recognize that their personal concerns and worries are so trivial and insignificant. It is there, beside the sick child and his suffering parents, that the honor and mission of the pediatric surgeon can truly be understood. Most importantly, it is in the ward and the operating room where they see the hope that the child will be effectively treated and recovered.
