Renal cyst imaging

Renal cysts are benign changes that are asymptomatic in patients and are usually detected during physical examination. The imaging presentation of renal cysts is a single or multiple rounded, low-density cystic lesions in the kidney, either unilaterally or bilaterally, with relatively well-defined borders and no enhancement on enhanced scans. Renal cysts are usually small and do not require human intervention or treatment, but if they are large and affect renal function, clinical intervention is required. In addition, parapelvic cysts require clinical intervention because the renal excretory ducts are directly connected to the renal pelvis and the parapelvic cysts will be involved in the urine production and excretion process. The difference in imaging presentation between parapelvic cysts and normal renal cysts is that on enhancement scans, contrast is observed to enter the cyst and parapelvic cysts are not necessarily round in shape but may also be irregularly shaped cysts.
