Can thyroid tumors be treated with Chinese medicine?

The thyroid gland is located in the neck, in front of the trachea, and is divided into two lobes, left and right, connected in the middle, with the right lobe slightly larger than the left lobe. The entire thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped, and under normal circumstances, the thyroid gland in the neck cannot be seen or touched. Thyroid hormone is synthesized from iodine in the blood and is controlled by thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) secreted by the pituitary gland. The thyroid gland is the largest endocrine gland in the human body and is essential for the maintenance of normal human development. It regulates the metabolic activities and growth and development of all tissues and organs in the body. Thyroid tumor is clinically characterized by enlarged nodules on both sides of the laryngeal nodes in front of the neck, which can move up and down with swallowing movements. In the early stage, it is usually discovered inadvertently during physical examination. Some lumps increase rapidly within a short period of time, compressing the trachea, esophagus and laryngeal nerve, resulting in breathing difficulties, swallowing difficulties and hoarseness, etc. It is important to be alert to the fact that benign thyroid tumors can develop into hyperthyroidism and a small number of them can become malignant. Thyroid tumors belong to the category of gall tumor disease in Chinese medicine. Gall tumor disease includes the current thyroid tumors such as simple goiter, nodular goiter, thyroid nodules, thyroid cysts, and thyroid tumors. Treatment of thyroid disease by Chinese medicine As for what treatment does Chinese medicine have for thyroid disease? Chinese medicine believes that this disease is caused by worry, depression and anger, internal injury, liver disorders, phlegm and dampness stagnation, resulting in disharmony of the internal organs and congestion of Qi and blood, resulting in the formation of lumps in the laryngeal nodes. During the development of the disease, there is a common characteristic of phlegm and qi obstruction, however, the different physical constitution and condition show different characteristics of the disease. For example, it may manifest itself as actual, deficiency, cold, heat, qi stagnation, stasis of blood and other symptoms. Therefore, the treatment does not only focus on the tumor of the neck, but also seeks the root of the disease and treats it from a holistic concept, and through identification, prescribes medicine according to different pathological changes in order to adjust the deviation of qi, blood, yin and yang of the body. If the main manifestation is qi stagnation, the treatment is based on draining the liver and regulating qi, and the drugs used are Chai Hu, Xiang Shen, Citrus aurantium, Buddha’s hand, Citrus aurantium, Chen Pi and Qing Pi. If the treatment is heavy in phlegm and dampness, the treatment is to dispel phlegm and dampness, with medicines such as Atractylodes galloprovincialis, Atractylodes macrocephala, Atractylodes macrocephala, Perilla frutescens, Radix et al. If the treatment is for blood stasis, the treatment is to invigorate the blood and remove blood stasis, with medicines such as Chuanxiong, Tao Ren, Hong Hua, San Ling, Curcuma longa and Pu Huang. If the heat toxicity is very high, the treatment is based on clearing heat and detoxifying and cooling the blood, with medicines such as Radix et Rhizoma, Radix et Rhizoma, Scutellaria, Gardenia, Peony Skin, Radix Paeoniae, etc. In fact, the general clinical symptoms often do not manifest as a single, many times can be manifested as a mixture of deficiency and reality, cold and heat mixed. It is the characteristic of Chinese medicine to take human as the main body and start from the whole, to eliminate evil or help righteousness, or to eliminate evil and help righteousness at the same time, so as to adjust the physiological functions of the five organs, and to choose the appropriate treatment and medicine for different physical constitution and condition. As for the question of whether Chinese medicine can shrink tumors? Through modern medical research, herbal medicine has the functions of softening hard knots, activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis, relieving depression in the liver and resolving phlegm. If the tumor is small, soft in texture and short in duration, timely treatment after diagnosis can partially achieve ideal results. In fact, the formation of tumor does not happen overnight, so TCM does not advocate the use of violent and poisonous drugs, and pays attention to the harmonization of the spleen and stomach in treating the disease, so as to achieve the good effect of eliminating the tumor. However, if the effect of Chinese medicine treatment is not obvious for more than three months, and the lump is hard and has the tendency of malignant transformation, surgery should be performed as soon as possible.
