Minimally invasive surgical treatment of osteoporotic thoracolumbar compression fractures in the elderly

With the increase of the aging population in society, the number of osteoporosis patients is increasing year by year, there are about 200 million osteoporosis patients in the world, and it is estimated that there are more than 50 million people in China, the prevalence of women over 50 years old reaches 50-70%, and the prevalence of elderly men reaches 30% . Patients with osteoporotic thoracolumbar compression fractures mainly present with pain, progressive spinal collapse, and retroflexion deformity, which seriously affects patients’ quality of life, physical activity, psychological health and life expectancy, with a significantly higher rate of death and disability and a significantly lower quality of life. Therefore, osteoporotic compression fractures of the thoracolumbar spine are receiving increasing attention. Traditional treatment using bed rest, pain medication, braces, anti-osteoporosis drugs and other methods, the elderly often difficult to endure, and a long course of complications, are unable to prevent further collapse and deformation of the vertebral body, and can not be early to the ground and add lead to a vicious circle. Li Shuwen, Department of Cervical Spine Surgery, Second Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical University
Percutaneous puncture balloon expansion of the vertebral body into the posterior convexity, is through a needle puncture into the fracture of the vertebral body, the establishment of a working channel, a special balloon into the vertebral body, through pressure to make the balloon expansion, the compressed vertebral body will be propped up reset, and then exit the balloon to inject bone cement, so that the fracture of the vertebral body to strengthen, to achieve the purpose of treatment. The whole procedure takes only about 20 minutes and is done under local anesthesia. The procedure is safe and effective, and the back pain is usually reduced significantly the next day, and the patient can get out of bed under the protection of the brace and be discharged from the hospital in 3-5 days.
