Plucking is an impulsive behavior of repeatedly not being able to restrain from pulling out one’s own hair. It occurs mainly in children, more often in women than in men, and is about seven times more common in children than in adults. Patients often pull out their hair (hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpit hair, pubic hair) by hand or with tools (e.g. tweezers, iron clips), and repeatedly cause hair loss in patches of varying sizes in the area where the hair was plucked, similar to baldness. Some patients simply cut the hair with scissors, which is called hair breakage fetish; some will swallow the plucked hair, which is called hair plucking fetish. These behaviors often occur when patients are resting, reading, watching TV, movies, doing homework, and are continuous or intermittent. The site of hair removal is often fixed in a certain place.
