I often encounter patients who ask, “I’ve been careful about my diet, but why do I keep getting acne? Acne is a chronic inflammation of the sebaceous glands of the hair follicles, and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as mental stress, late nights, and careless diet, all of which can lead to increased androgens (women also have androgens), increased sebaceous secretion, and clogged pores, resulting in whiteheads. For women, another factor is irregular menstruation, and many women suffer from premenstrual aggravation. So, diet is just one of the aspects, it’s not like eating a light diet doesn’t give you acne. For example, almost all of the patients I encounter with recurring acne have the habit of sleeping late, whether male or female. Even more difficult to control is the mental stress, which many patients aggravate or relapse before midterms or entrance exams or when studying abroad. It can be said that modern lifestyles support the onset of acne, which is why the incidence of acne is now rising dramatically.
