As the years go by, the sun’s UV rays repeatedly irradiate the skin surface for a long time, forming small brown patches, which can form a thick oily crust for a long time, which may be the annoying age spots. This may be the annoying age spot. It not only affects your beauty, but also reveals your age mercilessly. Age spots, also called photoaging spots, seborrheic keratosis, or age warts, usually occur after the age of 30 or 40 and are commonly found on the face, scalp, trunk, and upper extremities as small brown patches with clear boundaries, which may protrude from the skin surface and are light brown to dark brown or even black in color. They are usually multiple, varying in size, and occasionally itchy. Age spots seem to be simple and common, but sometimes they are not particularly easy to distinguish from some skin diseases, such as flat warts, coffee spots, melasma, freckles and even some malignant skin tumors. To distinguish these spots clearly, it is often necessary to do a skin histopathological examination, which means that a small surgery is performed to cut a piece of skin tissue, make a tissue section, and observe the lesions of tissue cells within the skin through a microscope to diagnose the skin disease. However, this method is invasive, bleeding and painful, and leaves scars of varying sizes and takes a long time after surgery, limiting its application and often not easily accepted. But nowadays, with “skin CT”, i.e. skin confocal microscopy, skin cytology and differential diagnosis can be performed non-invasively, painlessly and quickly. The skin can be imaged in real time, dynamically and in three dimensions at the cytological level, and the same area can be repeatedly examined. With this method, we will be able to know quickly which skin disease we are suffering from, and we will not spend a lot of unnecessary time, money and effort because we are unwilling or unable to do histopathological sections and confirm the diagnosis in time. Therefore, once a new spot is found on the face, we suggest to go to a regular hospital in time for a clear diagnosis and treatment by an experienced dermatologist! Age spots can be treated with Q-Switched YAG laser, Q-Switched Ruby laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) after diagnosis, which will give you beautiful skin and hide your age immediately in one to two weeks after the procedure. The laser produces a visible light with high intensity and instantaneous energy. Different wavelengths of laser light are absorbed by specific pigments in the skin, for example, age spots tend to absorb yellow and green light. The functions of lasers with various wavelengths of energy also vary, and there are currently 7 or 8 types of lasers used to treat skin problems. The Q-switched ruby laser, like the one you often hear about, uses the laser principle, and the laser emitted by ruby as the medium mainly acts on melanin, which is broken down instantly, and when the pigment particles are metabolized and absorbed by the body, the color of the pigment spots will then become lighter and disappear. Q-switched laser like this one can usually achieve satisfactory results in 1~2 times and the treatment is economical, but the treatment area is usually required to be strictly protected from light after treatment to match the treatment. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a gentler treatment. The advantages of this treatment are that it mostly does not interfere with commuting to work after treatment, does not require vacation, and can improve vascular dilation, skin color and texture at the same time, but it usually requires a longer treatment course, such as 5~8 treatments, and is a bit more expensive. Regardless of which of the above methods are relatively effective and “immediate” methods, after the operation does not leave any traces! In our daily life, we can reduce and prevent the formation of age spots by paying attention to sun protection and proper hydration. Regarding sun protection, since UV rays are an important cause of skin photoaging, we recommend using it daily even for children or elderly people. This is no exception for those who are simply exposed to sunlight from time to time. Sunscreen should be applied half an hour before going out, especially in summer when outdoor activities are longer and more often. It is usually recommended to use a sunscreen with a high SPF value, and the amount applied each time should be sufficient, otherwise it will not achieve the desired sun protection effect. Regarding moisturizing, we recommend using more moisturizers that contain unsaturated fatty acids such as linolenic acid and linoleic acid. Because unsaturated fatty acids are an important part of skin lipids, they play an important role in maintaining skin moisture and are substances that the body cannot synthesize on its own and must be replenished through skin or food supplements. Sun protection and moisturizing are the main means to slow down skin aging and prevent age spots.
