How to detect scoliosis in children?

Scoliosis is not uncommon in adolescents due to long-term problems such as poor posture, and the prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is 1 to 2 percent in adolescents. The usual age range for the onset of scoliosis is between 10 and 15 years old. 1, what is the bending angle called scoliosis? International Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), the angle of scoliosis has been standardized. The angle of scoliosis (Cobb’s angle) is measured by a spine surgeon on a full-length X-ray of the spine taken in the standing anterior-posterior position (orthostatic), and is defined as scoliosis only when the angle is greater than 10 degrees. 2, how is scoliosis detected? Forward flexion test: arms vertical down, hands together in front of the body, fingertips down, bend forward, the observer observes whether the patient’s back balance, such as a high and a low suggests that scoliosis may occur. 3, what about adolescent scoliosis? ① mild adolescent scoliosis: (scoliosis angle of 30 degrees or less), observation can be done, while back muscle exercise, that is, prone position, head and feet up at the same time (swallow fly); both shoulders and both upper limbs alternate back extension; both hips and both lower limbs alternate back extension. Regular review at the hospital to monitor if scoliosis becomes more severe. scoliosis of 30 degrees or less has a low risk of aggravation and other health problems in adulthood. ②Moderate adolescent scoliosis: (between 30 degrees and 45 degrees of scoliosis), brace treatment is generally recommended. ③Severe adolescent scoliosis: (scoliosis of 45 degrees or more), due to the heavy deformity, almost certain to develop post-adult exacerbations and other health problems (affecting cardiopulmonary function), patients with heavy scoliosis with a chest curve greater than 80° may eventually develop shortness of breath or other pulmonary problems. At this point, it is necessary to follow the doctor’s advice and decide whether to undergo surgery based on the actual condition of the scoliosis.
