What to do if you have a small cyst on your liver

Small cysts on the liver usually do not require special treatment, but only regular checkups and follow-ups are needed. The treatment of liver cysts should depend on the size, nature, and presence of complications of the cyst. Generally, if the cyst is five centimeters in diameter and has symptoms of compression, it can be treated by ultrasound-guided puncture and aspiration to relieve the compression symptoms, which is simple and does not require dissection and is a good treatment for patients with huge liver cysts that cannot tolerate surgery. If the patient has an infected liver cyst, it is advisable to perform external drainage as soon as possible. When complications arise, such as cyst rupture, cystic torsion, intracapsular hemorrhage or huge cysts compressing adjacent organs, surgical treatment is required. For surgical treatment, the cyst should be removed as completely as possible, or if this is not possible, a subtotal resection or at least 1/3 of the cyst wall should be removed so that the cystic fluid can be drained into the abdominal cavity.
